About Tata Steel

Tata Steel is the sixth-largest steel group in the world, producing, processing, and distributing high-quality steel for industrial applications worldwide. Its Dutch facility in IJmuiden is one of Europe’s largest steel plants. The BEX (Business Excellence) department is responsible for operational excellence and focuses on three pillars: daily management, continuous improvement, and innovation. Sander van Campen is a senior improvement consultant at BEX, responsible for continuous improvement through the Six Sigma methodology.

The Challenge

Tata Steel manages a large number of Green and Black Belt projects simultaneously. These projects are data-driven and increasing in complexity: datasets of 100,000 data points or more and fifteen or more variables are not uncommon. The organisation has sufficient internal knowledge but sometimes lacks capacity for project coaching and requires an external partner for training and certification.

Furthermore, data is decentralised across hundreds of systems, meaning project teams must request permission from data managers for every new analysis. This makes initiating projects cumbersome and slows down the improvement cycle.

Our Approach

Symbol supports Tata Steel in three areas: training, project coaching, and certification. The training programmes have been adapted with Tata Steel to their specific context, which is internally referred to as “Tata-ised”.

What has been done specifically:

  • Provided Green and Black Belt training, tailored to Tata Steel-specific examples and processes
  • Project coaching
  • Certification via LSSA
  • Advanced analytics for datasets of 100,000+ data points
  • Projects linked to annual plans and MT objectives

“Six Sigma projects genuinely deliver significant value for Tata Steel.”

Saving €58M per year

Symbol’s training and coaching over the past 10 years have contributed to tens of millions in savings and reduced emissions.

Lessons Learned

Data is not an end in itself but a means. Tata Steel demonstrates that the value of data is only unlocked when people are trained to work with it. Green and Black Belts who can analyse and interpret data are key to operational excellence in a data-rich environment.

The second insight: every project must deliver a positive business case. This strict requirement ensures that improvement projects are not initiated based on gut feeling but on factual substantiation. This increases the chance of success and makes the impact measurable.
