About Scoober (Just Eat Takeaway.com)

Scoober is Takeaway.com’s (Thuisbezorgd.nl) in-house delivery service, responsible for the last-mile delivery of meals in several countries. As part of one of Europe’s largest food delivery platforms, Scoober operates in an environment where speed, scalability, and consistency are essential. The company grew rapidly and faced the challenge common to many scale-ups: how do you ensure all branches work in the same way so that you can learn, improve, and scale up as an organisation?

The challenge

Scoober had significant potential for improvement but lacked the structure to exploit it. Branches operated as silos: they did not communicate sufficiently with each other and were therefore unable to learn from each other’s experiences. Processes were not standardised, meaning every branch was reinventing the wheel. This made the organisation unscalable and blocked continuous improvement.
Wendy Man was hired as a Lean Black Belt to set this up, but needed an experienced sparring partner to structure the approach and refine the plans.

Our approach

Symbol consultant Thom Luijben supported Scoober as a sparring partner and co-author of the plans. The approach was phased: first the foundation, then execution.

What was specifically achieved:

  • Lean plan established
  • Strategy plan developed
  • Process plan established
  • Training plan developed
  • Lean Champion training
  • Culture shift supported

“Theory alone is not enough for ambassadorship.”

From silos to a standardised, scalable organisation.
Scoober has laid a solid Lean foundation. The next step: audits of the standardised processes and further roll-out in other countries.

Lessons learned

A Lean trajectory in a fast-growing organisation does not start with running, but with planning. Scoober demonstrates that in an environment where everyone is always busy, you must first create a clear plan before you begin. Otherwise, every initiative ends up on the shelf.

The second insight: support starts with management. Lean will not stick if management is not enthusiastic. By training the MT first and then making results visible, you create the ambassadors who will bring the rest of the organisation along.
