A Green Belt learns how to investigate and solve a problem using the DMAIC methodology. However, before the Define phase can begin, it must first be clear which problem the organisation intends to address.

According to Juan, this starts with three questions: what goals do we want to achieve, where are we now, and what is holding us back? The manager or Champion selects a relevant problem. The Green Belt then helps to clearly describe, define, and systematically solve that problem.

We also discuss why improvement projects often fail not due to the techniques used, but due to a lack of time, priority, and commitment from the organisation.
